Today we interview Toni Talavera, head of design and CNC programming at Basor Electric. First of all, Toni, we want to congratulate you on your 10th anniversary with the company.
Thank you very much. Indeed, I’ve just completed 10 years in this second stage, from 2014 to 2024. However, I also had a previous stage, of two years, from 2007 to 2009, during a vulnerable time in my life as I had just closed a business project that didn’t go well. Luckily, I had the opportunity to join the Basor team.
1.Toni, can you tell us what your position entails?
My role involves CNC programming for the punch machines and laser machines, as well as CNC press brakes. I’ve also been programming a COBOT from Universal Robots for some time now, which adds another level of complexity. It’s a key position because much of the production, especially the tray accessories, comes from these machines, fully integrating me into the production department. However, I also do a lot of work for the product department, programming samples, prototypes, and even proposing modifications to certain parts to improve time and make the most of punch tools we already have.
2.What were your beginnings at Basor like?
My start at Basor was very exciting. I received a lot of help from Julio, who trained me for my role, and it was also important to feel the support of our department head, Manolo. This foundation allowed me to integrate quickly and advance in my role.
3.What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your current role?
The biggest challenge has been significantly increasing productivity in programming. The number of programs created in 2014, when I joined, is nothing compared to the current volume. Software support that sequences orders has been key, but so has the greater mastery I’ve gained of Lantek, a programming software that is quite challenging, along with the customization and automation of some phases.
In addition, the number of machines has grown. We’ve gone from programming two lasers and two punch machines to also including two press brakes and a Cobot. Now, we’re about to install a new punch machine as well. I believe the future lies in even more automation and robotics in the company. It’s also important to standardize some CNC programming and strengthen this section within the production department to maintain efficiency at optimal levels.
4.What do you think sets Basor apart from other companies?
Definitely the people. I believe we have a team of very skilled and committed professionals. It’s inevitable to get along better with some than others, but overall it’s a close-knit and harmonious team. We have a strong sense of camaraderie, and even outside of work, we often get together for drinks or sports, like cycling.
We also fondly remember colleagues who are no longer with us, like our friend Edu, who left a lasting mark on all of us. Without a doubt, what sets Basor apart from other companies is its workers and the bond we create both inside and outside of the company.
